LGBTQIA+ Addiction Treatment Center in South Florida

Seeking addiction treatment can be challenging no matter who you are, but members of the LGBTQIA+ community face challenges that may make it even more daunting. Factors like discrimination, mental health concerns, and a lack of equitable resources make many in the community prone to addiction.

A significant part of this problem is a lack of treatment facilities that work to accept and uplift members of the community while considering their needs. That’s why Calusa Recovery is here to provide the best South Florida LGBTQ addiction treatment possible. Our goal is to inspire our clients to change their lives for the better, and we take extra care to meet the needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals as we do.

Trends in Substance Use Among LGBTQIA+ Individuals

Addiction can affect anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. However, evidence shows that substance use and substance use disorders (SUDs) are more frequent among members of the LGBTQIA+ Community. Some estimates suggest that SUD rates for this population are around double that of most American adults. But why is this the case, and how can it be fixed? To understand the answer, we must consider the challenges disproportionately affecting LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Prevalent trauma and mental health concerns

Social stigma, internal conflict, relationship tension, and similar challenges increase a person’s risk of mental illness. As a result, members of the LGBTQIA+ community are more than twice as likely as their peers to experience a mental health disorder. Those who identify as transgender are nearly four times as likely as cisgender individuals to be diagnosed with a mental health condition. Since mental health is often a risk factor for addiction, a higher chance of developing a mental illness can translate to a higher chance of misusing substances. When trauma associated with gender or sexual identity comes into play on top of this, the risk of addiction can skyrocket. Many people turn to substances for relief from stress, pain, and loneliness, which can create a vicious cycle that worsens mental health needs.

Heightened stigma and social isolation

Unfortunately, many members of the LGBTQIA+ community face a lack of support from family or friends. They might also experience stigma and bigotry from community members or struggle to find peers who share their experiences. As a result, LGBTQIA+ individuals are more prone to feeling isolated than others, which may further increase the attractiveness of substance misuse.

The impact of limited sources of affirming care

Healthcare and mental health services that are accepting and affirming for members of the LGBTQIA+ community can be hard to come by, especially in smaller, rural communities. The damage that having one’s needs misunderstood or misrepresented causes can be immeasurable, as can struggling to access compassionate professionals. Challenges like these might affect how readily a person seeks treatment for health concerns, including addiction.

How Our South Florida LGBTQ Drug Rehab Can Help

At Calusa Recovery, we are dedicated to being a top LGBTQIA+ addiction treatment center in South Florida. We understand how addiction uniquely affects those within the community, and our programming is designed to make an impactful difference.

We support our clients by treating them as whole people, not just someone with an addiction. This goal permeates every action we take, allowing us to offer benefits like those below.

  • Customized Treatment Plans. The more clients can control their treatment approach, the more likely they are to engage with it. Higher levels of engagement translate to better results and more substantial progress made during treatment.
  • Holistic Approach to Care. While addiction is the focus of our care, we also target related concerns like mental health and unresolved trauma. We believe it’s vital to help clients heal emotionally, mentally, and spiritually as they work toward their goals.
  • Safe, Uplifting Community. We are committed to creating a safe and accepting space for all clients to share and grow in. Members of the LGBTQIA+ can always find acceptance and understanding from our staff of clinical professionals.

Programs at Our LGBTQIA+ Addiction Treatment Center in South Florida

At Calusa Recovery, we provide several addiction treatment programs to support LGBTQIA+ clients. Our team strives to form meaningful relationships with our clients from the very first day they walk through our doors. Below is a preview of the programs we offer to support members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Partial hospitalization program (PHP)

Our partial hospitalization program is an ideal step between inpatient care (in which a client stays at a facility full-time) and outpatient treatment. At our South Florida LGBTQ drug rehab facility, clients engage in a set number of sessions and hours of treatment each week per their treatment plan. Then, they can return home each night to stay on top of other tasks and responsibilities. This option is ideal for those who need more flexibility than inpatient treatment offers but could still benefit from a more rigorous, supervised level of care.

Intensive outpatient program (IOP)

Calusa Recovery’s intensive outpatient program provides more frequent treatment than our traditional outpatient program, making it a good fit for those who have completed a higher level of care but still need some extra support. During our IOP, clients can participate in evidence-based and holistic therapies more frequently, allowing them to continuously check in with our staff.

Traditional outpatient program

Our outpatient program is among the most popular forms of South Florida LGBTQ addiction treatment. It’s a good choice for those who have completed an IOP or whose needs are not severe enough to warrant more comprehensive treatment. Outpatient care asks clients to attend therapy sessions at least once a week, providing regular support without interfering with daily life.

Sober living program

The sober living program here at Calusa Recovery is an excellent way for clients to stay on track with their goals long after formal treatment has ended. This program invites alums to return to our facility to address challenges, connect with peers, and remind themselves why their goals matter. The goal is to help clients stay sober and confident as time goes on, promoting long-term recovery.
